Public Health Programs

Immunization clinics: All routine childhood immunizations and adult tetanus vaccine are provided at no charge. Adult Hepatitis B is available at a nominal fee. Call 647-8821 for clinic dates, times, locations and further information. Each fall, influenza and pneumonia vaccines are offered throughout the county.

Prenatal Care Coordination: This is a Medical Assistance (MA) and BadgerCare service that offers risk assessment and education to eligible pregnant women, in order that their babies get a healthy start.

Maternal and Child Health: Home visits and telephone consultations are made by Public Health Nurses to new mothers and their infants. Services include newborn assessment, information and support, and breastfeeding consultation.

WIC: This is a nutrition program by the Department of Agriculture for Women, Infants and Children. It is conducted by Southwest Community Action Program and provides nutrition education, food drafts, iron and lead testing. Call 1-800-704-8555 for information.

Fluoride: Supplements are provided at a reasonable cost for families using unfluoridated water. Well water must be tested for fluoride content before supplements are dispensed. Free well water test kits are available.
HealthCheck: Physical and developmental assessments, health histories, counseling and referrals are available to children 21 years of age and under who are enrolled in MA/BadgerCare.

Disease Control: Public Health Nurses provide information and follow-up on contagious diseases. TB skin tests are available at a nominal charge.

Loan Closet: Equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, bath benches, crutches, etc.) may be borrowed for up to one year by Richland County residents. A small deposit is required.

Wisconsin Well Woman Health Screening Program (WWWP): Free screenings, diagnostic tests and referrals related to heart disease, breast cancer, cervical cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, depression, and domestic abuse are offered, for income eligible women aged 45 to 64. Older women who have not had recent screenings are encouraged to participate.

Rabies Prevention: All animal bites to humans require reporting. Investigation and follow-up are provided by Public Health in conjunction with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Richland Center Police Department, and the Richland County District Attorney.


Environmental Health:
Well Water Testing: Free kits are available for testing of private wells for bacteria, fluoride and nitrates through the State Lab of Hygiene. A Registered Sanitarian is available for consultation.
Radon testing: : Radon is one of the most serious health hazards that can be found in indoor air and it is completely invisible, having no odor or color. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and responsible for up to 30,000 deaths per year. Short-term radon test kits are available free of charge through Richland County Health and Human Services Public Health. Call 647-8821 with questions or stop in to pick up a test kit. . Consultation is available.
Human Health Hazards: Reported complaints are investigated and followed up by the Health Officer .
Lead Poisoning Prevention: Children 6 years of age and under are eligible for blood lead screening and risk assessments. Home assessment and public health education are also provided.

Nutrition: The senior nutrition program is designed to provide an opportunity for Seniors to socialize and receive a well balanced, nutritious meal that provides 1/3 of a senior citizen’s daily food requirement. Persons over 60 are able to participate in the nutrition program on a donation basis, all others are required to pay the full cost of the meal (younger persons with disabilities can obtain a waiver in some situations).
 
Reservations for Congregate and Home Delivered meals are a MUST at all meal sites. Call 10 a.m.-1:00 p.m. to reserve your next days meal at the meal site you plan to attend. You must reserve at least one day ahead.
 
Richland Center Meal Site: Town and Country Presbyterian Church at 345 S Cairns Avenue in Richland Center: Lunch served at 11:45am. Call 647-2323 to make reservations.
 
St. Anthony’s School at 32497 County Highway V in Germantown: Lunch served at 11:45am. Call 983-2786 to make reservations.
 
The Viola Village Officers (Old Elementary School) 106 West Wisconsin Ave. in Viola: Lunch served at 11:30am. Call 627-1869 to make reservations.
 
Karen’s Supper Club at 25338 Jackson St in Boaz: Lunch served - Wednesday Only - at 11:30. Call 536-3792 to make reservations.
 
Rockbridge Elementary School in Rockbridge: Lunch served on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11:30 Call 647-9187 to make reservations by 1:00 the business day before you wish to eat
 
Home Delivered Meals are available for those seniors who are not able to attend a congregate site due to illness or physical disability. To receive a Home Delivered meal, a prescription from a doctor stating that you are homebound or would benefit from a home delivered meal is necessary.
 
hese meals may be ordered through the nearest meal site (only those that serve 5 days per week) to be delivered hot 5 days a week, if within 5 miles of that site. Frozen meals are available for weekends and for those people greater than 5 miles from the nearest meal site.
 
Home Delivered, specialized diet meals are available 7 days/week within Richland Center. To order one of these meals, call Richland County Health & Human Services at 647-8821 and ask to speak to Linda Rohn.
